Today is the last day (for this year) that you have to read about the deadline for the Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest. Perhaps you wonder why we have worked so hard to plug the contest lately. I’ll tell you. Last year’s Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest had 135 entries. This year my master sheet tells me we have 91.

I am a semi-decent cook, though to be honest, I manage to retain this status by avoiding recipes with say, more than ten ingredients (not including spices/other pantry staples, of course), or more than, say, six steps. I also avoid recipes that involve the broiler, which scares me and invariably sets off our smoke detector.
