About
The New Quarterly—TNQ, for short—is a Canadian literary journal known for wit, warmth, and literary innovation. Our style is celebratory, and we’re well known for finding, as well as nurturing, distinctive voices, and for continuing to support writers throughout their career. We publish short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that explores both the craft and the writing life. Watch for TNQ writers among those cited for National Magazine Awards, the Man Booker Prize, the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, the Journey Prize, and the Writers Trust Fiction Prize.
Each issue brings our readers work by both emerging and established writers, and, while TNQ has always been an inclusive publication, we have renewed our commitment to encouraging writers who may be experiencing barriers regarding race, gender, ability, sexual orientation, or age to consider TNQ when they’re ready to submit their finest work.
The magazine first debuted, staple-bound, in 1981, thanks to the efforts of then writer-in-residence at the University of Waterloo and Newfoundland writer Harold Horwood, with financial help from pioneering journalist Edna Staebler, and the inimitable Farley Mowat. In the early years TNQ was co-edited by Peter Hinchcliffe and Kim Jernigan. Kim Jernigan then became editor, and held the position until 2012.
The vital support of some of our earliest and most faithful sustainers is now acknowledged in the names of TNQ’s three contests.
While TNQ’s home is now St Jerome’s University, a founding college of the University of Waterloo, the magazine has always been engaged with the community: encouraging artistic collaborations across disciplines, hosting readings and literary events, partnering with One Book One Community, Appetite for Reading, the region’s libraries, and our local indie bookstore Words Worth Books, and by pioneering collaborations with publications such as Arc Poetry Magazine, Canadian Notes and Queries, and Alternatives Journal.
TNQ’s vibrant, connected community extends to our website, where we post guest blog posts and author interviews, and to the annual Wild Writers Literary Festival, where the conversation about all things literary leaps off the page, as writers and readers come face-to-face.
The New Quarterly acknowledges that its office is located on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnawbe and Haudenosaunee peoples. The University of Waterloo is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River.
