Below is an excerpt from the preparatory script Pauline created before embarking on artwork for the “Bird’s Eye View” poems. Corresponding scripts have been created for each poem or otherwise-discriminated section of the larger “story,” and are working documents that are the locus for negotiating the play between words and pictures. The script is a typical practice in the production of comic books, but usually looks more like instructions from the writer to the artist. This segment demonstrates a more collaborative practice: the resulting narratives include images that were not always intended by Anita, straying far from simple “illustration” of the text.
