Pawatamihk (Dream)

By Catherine Phillips

  • I walked to the water, swam out to where I could
  • no longer feel the eyes of a red horizon. You see, the
  • earth wanted to rinse me in its cool saliva, rub my
  • skin until it was smooth like the pebbles that made
  • a bed beneath my feet. Was I just dreaming? I had
  • visions of your stillness on solid ground, heard you’d
  • choked on plumes of contrition eager to escape your
  • lungs and join the clouds. That’s when I knew it was
  • time to get back to the land. But by then my flesh
  • was softened like cooked meat, peeling off the bone.
  • The whiteness of my skeleton, far too bright.
  • A great hell hidden in pieces.

Kiss Me Again Like The Second Time
Ah see it all wit’ mih own two eyes!

Territorial Acknowledgement

The New Quarterly is based in Waterloo, Ontario, on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabeg, and Neutral Peoples. We acknowledge that this land is part of the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to the Six Nations of the Grand River as part of the Haldimand Proclamation of 1784.

As a literary magazine devoted to storytelling, we recognize that stories have long been a way of knowing, preserving, and sharing in Indigenous cultures. We honour the generations of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples who have cared for these lands and continue to do so. We commit to listening, learning, and amplifying Indigenous voices, and to supporting pathways for truth and reconciliation through the stories we publish.
