Writing Spaces: Sivan Slapak

By Sivan Slapak

I write best in cafés, I have for years. The truth is that if the urge comes (or given a deadline!) I’ll write from anywhere, but I like to be out and surrounded by a low hum, with coffee and snacks at frequent intervals. Being at home is distracting – I suddenly have a need to do tons of housework and errands, the sofa is too comfortable, and there went the afternoon! In a café, surrounded by noise and people I have no trouble ignoring but can’t nap in front of, I seem to be my most productive. I’ve developed a love of cafés with window bars – I’ve discovered many in Montreal! – so that’s my ideal perch. When I lived in Jerusalem, I got a lot done in my ‘makom kavuah‘ (my regular spot) at my neighbourhood Cafe Carousela, and when some stranger snapped a photo a few years ago, I was there sitting in it (surprise!) Here in Montreal I’ve got a couple of windows that also seem to be working out for me.
